Pop band McFly are headlining a concert in Rhyl, Denbighshire, to coincide with the Olympic Games’ closing ceremony.

The show at the Rhyl Events Arena will also play host to other acts, including the punk and dance group Dive Bella Dive.

The 8,000 seater arena opens its doors at 14:30 BST and will screen the closing ceremony in London.

It comes after the Access All Eirias concert in Colwyn Bay screened the opening ceremony two weeks ago.

A spectacular closing ceremony starts from 21:00 BST.

After 16 days of competition at the Olympic Park and Cardiff, London will hand over to 2016 host city Rio de Janeiro in what promises to be a stunning show involving 3,500 performers in the stadium.

Artistic director Kim Gavin said the ceremony would be “the best after-show party of all time”.

McFly Rhyl

CHART-toppers McFly have a special link with North Wales, and headed to the region to record material for their latest album. Now they’re looking forward to returning to help kick-start a revamped Rhyl venue, and bring the London Olympics to a close.

They will take to the stage on Sunday afternoon to perform their hits at Rhyl Events Arena, which for the first time has been turned into an enclosed, ticket-only space.

The show – which civic leaders hope will the first of many by big names in the Arena – also features The Struts and Dive Bella Dive, and will be followed by a free, live streaming of the Olympic Games’ closing ceremony on huge screens.

McFly bassist Dougie Poynter revealed the band find themselves back on the North Wales coast, after a brief visit in January when they came to gather material for their new album, which is still being recorded..

“It’s going to be mad in Rhyl,” said Dougie, who was recently crowned King of the Jungle in TV’s I’m A Celebrity… .

“We’ve got a full set so that means we’ve got lots of time to have fun and mess around on stage and that’s when we are at our best. We love coming to Wales, the people are awesome and we love your accents.

“We were in Holyhead at the start of the year to write some material. It was the first time we’d been there and it was amazing. We didn’t really know what to expect but it was so picturesque.

“There is actually one song in particular on the new album that was inspired by the area.

“Danny (Jones, the lead singer) is producing the new album too, which is cool because there’s no middle man, so it’s the first time it will just be 100% McFly.”

It has been a busy year for the band with Dougie’s stint in the jungle, plus drummer Harry Judd winning Strictly Come Dancing, but Dougie says there was never a doubt of the band splitting,

“It must seem like we’ve been apart for ages but we’re still very much together making music. We never go anywhere apart and we are always together behind the scenes.

“After Harry did Strictly he was actually offered to do a solo album for Mother’s Day, but he’s a drummer and doesn’t sing, I don’t think any of us would ever go solo.”

“We’ve got two shows coming up in LA and New York. We’re pretty much going over for fun. We know we’ve got fans over there so we thought we’d go and put on a show for them.”

Fingers crossed this involves McFly doing a three-legged race
What with the Olympics all set to descend on London later on this summer, there are some pretty exciting things going on. It’s not all shotputting and 100m sprints though and we are very excited to hear that McFly will be playing a special show as part of the BT London Live gigs going on in Hyde Park during the sporty season.

We can’t imagine Danny, Tom, Dougie and Harry doing much more than an egg and spoon race, but luckily the lads will be sticking to what they know best and are all set to take to the stage for a free show in Hyde Park on Saturday August 4.

You don’t have to worry about missing out on any Olympic action either as the music will be timed to allow you to watch all the action going on that day, which is set to include the finals of swimming, rowing, the Women’s 100m Sprint and the climaax of the Heptathalon and Triathlon too. In total that should be a whopping 25 medals to be dished out during the day and frankly, what could be better than topping it all off with a nice bit of McFly?

Frankly, we’ve our fingers cross that they stick with the sportswear theme and take to the stage in lycra cycling suits.

If you can’t make it down to see McFly on August 4, there are plenty of other BT London Live gigs going on during the Olympics and we have to say we’ve got our eye on Snow Patrol at the gig set to coincide with the Opening Ceremony!

Although the gigs are free, you can get your mits on priority tickets and a whole load more info by clicking here.

What do you get when you cross one hot current boyband with one former boyband and a Strictly Come Dancing Trophy and a Jungle crown?

We may have given the game away. We also may have just confused you. We may have confused ourselves. What we were trying to say in one big breathless squeal of excitement is that The Wanted and those gorgeous McFly boys have announced they will be performing, together!

Sorry, we had to run round the room in excitement there.

The huge concert will be dual-headlined by the two bands (we get it, one of them is not better than the other, they are equally lovely) for Blackpool’s brand new Tower Festival Headland on Sunday 24th June. Right opposite Blackpool tower, where Harry was only a month ago.

It’s a while away but these grey days have us dreaming of summer and this is an event that we really like thinking about. The Wanted have been recently touring the US with Justin Bieber, achieving great early success over there with Max even tweeting this morning:

“Cant believe whats happened to me in the last 3 years….from nothing to touring america…. Thanks so much… Doin it for you guys x”

In the meantime, the McFly boys have been biding their time in the background. That is until recently, when Dougie became King of the Jungle on I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here at the same time as Harry became the Strictly Come Dancing champion. They are also embarking on a UK tour and we should be able to hear some new material from the guys – we’ve been waiting a while!

All in all, a seaside weekend break with these boys thrown in, doesn’t sound half bad. Although you’d better make sure you get in early if you want a ticket. The tickets for McFly’s upcoming tour sold out within a few days!
