[x01]Live Performances > 2012 > McFLY In Rhyl – August 12th

CHART-TOPPERS McFly kicked off a new era in Rhyl yesterday as they played to a packed events arena.

Council bosses hope the pop superstars will be the first of many big names to play the revamped seafront site.

For the first time the arena was screened-off to create a ticket-only space, holding an audience of 5,000.

Fans ignored the rain to queue to see their idols take to the stage after performances by The Struts and Dive Bella Dive.

Later the arena’s giant screens streamed the Olympics closing ceremony.

Denbighshire County Councillor for Rhyl, Brian Blakeley, said the event was huge.

“To get artists down to the events arena in Rhyl, like McFly, it’s absolutely fantastic,” said Cllr Blakeley.

“If it turns out to be a success, it’s the start of something new.

“We do the air show for free, and we do Fun In The Sun for free, where we get artists from the X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. The public get something great from Rhyl for nothing.”

Cllr Blakeley said he thought the audience got value for money at the £20-a-ticket event

“I would think it’s a damn good thing. We’re trying to get Rhyl back on its feet. It has been talked about all over the town.”

It’s part of a huge effort to clean-up and regenerate the town, added Cllr Blakeley.

“We’re trying to get funding in from everywhere, our MP and AM are working hard,” he said.

“But the only way we can get people back into Rhyl, without them going straight through to Llandudno, is to get them interested in what’s going on here.

“It’s a trial, it’s a start, and if it works, it could be absolutely great for Rhyl.”

Jamie Groves, Denbighshire’s Head of Leisure, Libraries and Community Development, said: “This event brings an exciting new dimension to the possibilities for future, large scale events in Rhyl.

“Securing the arena opens up huge potential for ticketed concerts with international, ‘big name’ artists.

“This is another positive step in developing tourism and leisure in Denbighshire and compliments recently announced plans for commercial development in Rhyl.”

Chart stars McFly have been added to the bill of the free Olympics concert in London’s Hyde Park.

The quartet – whose drummer Harry Judd won last year’s Strictly Come Dancing – will play the BT London Live show on August 4.

They join a list of acts which includes Sir Tom Jones, the cast of We Will Rock You, Feeder, Dodgy, The Levellers, Cast and Amy Macdonald.

The event will also feature giant screens carrying footage of many of the sporting events that day, with 25 medals to be awarded.

Finals of the women’s 100m and women’s triathlon are among the highlights along with a number of swimming and rowing finals.

The event is in addition to the BT London Live shows which coincide with the opening and closing ceremonies, featuring Duran Duran and Blur.
