Birmingham’s LG Arena to host four concerts as McFly and Busted members form supergroup for 2014 tour
They are the one-time pop rivals who are now forging a new future together.
And it was at McFly’s ten year anniversary concert at the Royal Albert Hall in September that James Bourne, Matt Willis, Dougie Poynter, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones and Harry Judd saw the light.
“McFly and Busted were written in lights at the show, as we’d been invited to perform with them. Then the two names came together and formed McBusted. And that’s the truth about how we got our name,” said former-Busted member James.
His former band partner Matt Willis, married to Birmingham-born Big Brother presenter Emma Willis, added: “We didn’t go for BusFly as that is worse than McBusted! And anyways we did this s*** off our own backs. There’s no record company behind us.”
Even without a record company behind them, McBusted are in demand as they descend on Birmingham for four concerts. Former McFly star Tom, a soon to-be-dad with wife Giovanna added: “There always has to be a reason to be playing together as a super group. We have to earn the right to do this.’’
“We had to know to wait for the right time. We’ve all been friends for ages,” said Danny, playing down the one-time rivalry. “Even the wives and girlfriends get on, there is no rivalry and never has been. Tom and Matt were at school together.
“What matters is what the fans really want and, so far, they have been incredible.’’
Fellow former McFly star Harry added: ‘‘We had 11 shows booked to start with and after 30 minutes of the tickets going on sale we were told that we would be doing at least 39 shows.’’
When asked why Charlie Simpson, Busted’s former-lead singer, hadn’t joined them on the new pop adventure, Matt said: “He’s not ready for it and I wish him all the luck with his solo career.”
James added: “When Charlie left, he really did make a full-on departure. We weren’t friends, we weren’t in each other lives. But after a seven year gap we finally spoke about one and a half years ago. We all want to remain friends.”
Charlie reportedly received a six-figure sum as part of Busted and McFly’s new union.
Catch them at the LG Arena on May 2, 3, 17 and 27.
