SOUTH Shields singing sensation Joe McElderry says he’s thrilled to be on the bill of a top music concert set to be held in the town.

The 21-year-old will perform at Sound Waves 2013, a brand new event to be held this summer, alongside McFly and more acts still to be announced.

The paid-for concert will be staged on Sunday, August 25, at Bents Park in Sea Road.

Joe, from Westoe, created hysteria the last time he played in Bents Park.

The record-breaking gig, on July 24, 2011, saw 26,000 people rush to South Shields seafront from across the globe – the biggest-ever crowd at one of the concerts.

People travelled from as far as America, and even camped out overnight to secure a spot as close to their idol as possible.

The X Factor and Popstar to Operastar champ said: “I’m so excited to play at Bents Park again. The last time was amazing.

“I was so overwhelmed by how many people turned up, and the atmosphere was just fantastic.

“It’s going to be amazing to share the stage with McFly, and I can’t wait to get up there and do it all over again.”

Although Sound Waves has been arranged as a one-off, organisers say it could become an annual event if it proves popular.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “McFly are responsible for some of the biggest hits of the past 10 years, and we’re delighted that they’ll be part of the Sound Waves 2013 line-up, alongside South Shields’s Joe McElderry and a whole host of other acts which are yet to be announced.

“This huge new event will be a great addition to the North-East event calendar, and builds on South Tyneside’s already hugely-successful reputation as a place to visit.

Thousands of people enjoy our events every year and, with the addition of Sound Waves 2013, we look forward to welcoming many more.”

Sound Waves 2013 forms part of a wider programme of live music and family events throughout South Tyneside this summer.

Dancing in the Moonlight singers Toploader and The South – who consist of former members of the Beautiful South – will perform on July 21, followed by ’80s popstar Rick Astley on July 28.

The acts set to play at a third and final free concert are yet to be announced.

Other highlights include the annual South Tyneside Summer Festival, which offers free entertainment from June until the
end of August, and the Foghorn Requiem, which will see a unique piece of original music being performed both on and offshore on June 22.
