Chart-topping band McFly have been named as the headliner for a new open-air concert in the North East

Sound Waves 2013 will see a host of big names performing live at Bents Park, South Shields seafront, on Sunday, August 25.

Headliners McFly, whose hits include Five Colours in Her Hair, All About You, Star Girl and Shine a Light, are the first act to be officially announced by organisers South Tyneside Council, with Joe McElderry also being confirmed for the bank holiday concert.

Coun Alan Kerr, deputy leader of South Tyneside Council, said: “McFly are responsible for some of the biggest hits of the past 10 years and we’re delighted that they’ll be headlining Sound Waves 2013.

“We’re also looking forward to welcoming South Shields’ Joe McElderry and a whole host of other acts which are yet to be announced.

“This huge new event will be a great addition to the North East event calendar and builds on South Tyneside’s already hugely successful reputation as a place to visit.

“Thousands of people enjoy our events every year and, with the added addition of Sound Waves 2013, we look forward to welcoming many more.”

Tickets for Sound Waves 2013 went on sale this week, priced at £20 each.

They are available from The Customs House, South Shields, in person, by calling 0191 454 1234 or online at www.customshouse.co.uk.

Sound Waves forms part of a wider programme of live music and family events running throughout South Tyneside this summer.

Other highlights include the annual South Tyneside Summer Festival, which offers free entertainment from June until the end of August, and the Foghorn Requiem, which will see a unique piece of original music being performed both on and off shore on June 22.
