MCFLY are hoping their relationship with One Direction continues for many years to come.

The manband have penned tracks for both 1D albums, including I Would from the boys’ current disc Take Me Home.

And contrary to reports, the songs they give them are not McFly cast-offs.

Singer Tom Fletcher, above, told me: “It’s quite a selective process, writing for other bands.

“I don’t want to write a song for just anyone.

“I only do it for people I really like because that’s when you do your best work, so I hope the relationship we have with One Direction can continue.”

And the maturing quartet have no problems being associated with a teenage boyband.

Tom, 27, continued: “I love great pop music.

“When What Makes You Beautiful came out it was like a breath of fresh air. It’s perfect pop and you don’t think about anything else.

“The new Taylor Swift single is the same.”

Back with their greatest hits collection Memory Lane, McFly are trying their best not to get too teary-eyed about their decade in pop.

Drummer Harry Judd, 26, mused: “You can’t be overly nostalgic, because then it becomes less special. Nostalgia has to wear away, we want to carry on for ever.”

Many things have changed over the years, but the band’s fans haven’t. Singer Danny Jones, 26, laughed: “We turned on the Christmas lights in Bolton recently and it was like going back eight years.

“The fans are no less intense, there’s always that teenage generation that comes through and we stay relevant for them.

“Some of our older fans are in their 20s now, some we’ve known for years and are getting married, so we stay connected to them.”
