“ARE you feeling summery?’’ screamed McFly to over 2,000 fans in a Whitehaven car park on Friday night.

The multi-million selling band played an up-close and personal gig kick-starting this year’s Whitehaven Festival.

Having recently announced a four-night sell-out run at the Royal Albert Hall, McFly members, Tom Fletcher, Danny Jones, Dougie Poynter and Harry Judd, performed in the sun on the town’s harbourside.

The band showed why they are the most popular gig in the festival’s history -tickets sold out almost immediately – by showcasing 10 years of hits.

Starting with That Girl, the set included Star Girl, Five Colours in Her Hair, Shine a Light, Obviously, as well as covers Don’t Stop Me Now and I Saw Her Standing There. Tom also played Love is Easy on his famous pink ukulele.

While McFly, dressed in black waistcoats and ties, joked with their audience, they have always been a ‘boy band’ to be taken seriously writing their own material and playing live.

Finishing their performance, the band – supported by Wigton’s school band The 45s, and teenage band The Vamps – dedicated one of their biggest hits, It’s All About You, to a girl in the audience.

They finished the night with The Heart Never Lies.

The band were watched by Meghan Thomson, of Whitehaven, and her friends Ellie Gahan, of Cockermouth, Amy Tidyman, of Ennerdale, Hannah Telford, of Whitehaven, and Emma Sandham, of Cockermouth.

Meghan said: “The band was world class.

“This was the best act to have ever played Whitehaven.’’

McFly headlined this weekend’s Whitehaven Festival which will be attracting around 250,000 visitors to the town.

Other celebrities attending the event, over the next two days, include X Factor’s Louis Walsh, chefs Jean Christophe Novelli and Rosemary Shrager, as well as performances by Slade, Sweet, From The Jam, Alvin Stardust and the Bay City Rollers.
