Rachel Lawson was stunned when Dan Tillsley popped the question before thousands of fellow McFly fans in Birmingham on Saturday night.

It was the gig McFly fan Rachel Lawson will never forget – after her boyfriend proposed live on stage in front of her musical heroes.

The 23-year-old was stunned when her sweetheart Dan Tillsley popped the question before thousands of fellow fans in Birmingham on Saturday night.

Dan, aged 30, had told Rachel they were going to meet the chart-topping band during the interval at the 02 Academy.

But instead the couple were led straight onto the stage where the salesman asked her to marry him after a nine-month romance.

Quoting lyrics from the band’s hit, Love is Easy, Dan produced a ring and, going down on one knee, told her: “You have made me incredibly happy already. Would you do me the honour of being my wife?”

After a delighted Rachel accepted, the pair shared a kiss before Dan, originally from Redditch, told the screaming crowd: “She said yes!”

The couple, who live together in Stafford, met in a nightclub.

Dan bought Rachel, a social worker, tickets to the gig as a Christmas present and then arranged the proposal through a series of secret Twitter messages with McFly’s tour manager.

“I told Rachel we were going to meet the band at the interval but, instead of the dressing room, we were led through a door onto the stage,” he said yesterday.

“It was mental. I was shaking like a leaf. I think Rachel was gobsmacked and the reaction afterwards was overwhelming. More than 100 people came up to congratulate us.”

Rachel admitted she was struggling to take in Dan’s unique declaration of love.

She said: “I’m sitting here now asking myself: ‘Did that really happen?’

“He told me we were going to meet the band but I had no idea of what he was really up to.

“He is obviously a very good actor – he went shopping last month telling me it was his parents’ wedding anniversary – but he was buying the ring instead.”

Congratulations messages poured in for the happy couple on Twitter – including from McFly star Tom Fletcher who got married last year to Giovanna Falcone.

Tom wrote: “Thanks Birmingham, tonight was wicked! Congrats to the couple who got engaged on stage tonight. May you have a lovely future together.”
