BIRTHDAY boy McFly’s Dougie Poynter got a taste of Geordie hospitality when he turned up for a Newcastle gig.

Cake queens Katie Deacon and Kay Winder rose to the occasion and baked a treat for the heart-throb pop star as he turned 25.

Dougie, who is guitarist and vocalist with the rock pop band, was presented with the vanilla cake when he joined other chart-toppers at Friday’s Metro Radio Live in front of a 10,000 sell-out crowd at the Metro Radio Arena.

The girls, who own Pet Lamb Patisserie in Newcastle’s Grainger Market, created their rainbow masterpiece combining four layers of red, yellow, green and blue sponge and topped it with a cream cheese frosting.

And thrilled Dougie couldn’t wait to tuck into his tasty home-baked pressie when he was given it backstage.

Dougie, who won the 2011 series of I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! beating fellow Essex man Mark Wright, said: “Performing live is what we all enjoy the most so the fact it was my birthday didn’t make a difference.

“We love coming to Newcastle and if we get cakes like this every time we’ll be back more often. I don’t think I’ve ever had a dressing room surprise like this one. It was delicious and was all gone before we left.”

Katie and Kay cooked the cake after a chance meeting with Metro Radio Arena staff.

Katie, 29, of Gateshead, said: “We were invited to a party after the One Show was filmed at Northumbria University in September.

“There we met the people from Metro Radio Arena. Time passed and we got a phone call from them saying they were looking for businesses to supply things to go into the goody bags for the artists. They asked if we could supply some cupcakes. But over our conversation it was mentioned that Dougie would love his cupcake as it was his birthday.

“So we went one stage further and said we would bake him a birthday cake.

“It was a shame we couldn’t be there to give him the cake ourselves but work was calling as we had a Christmas market to go to.

“We think McFly are cute and are chuffed that we have made him a cake. We’re glad he liked it.”

Katie and Kay also made 78 cup cakes for the other performing artists, Olly Murs, Lawson, Misha B, Scouting For Girls, Stooshe, Conor Maynard, Labrinth, Angel, Leona Lewis, DJ Fresh, Amelia Lily and Little Mix.

A spokesman for Metro Radio Arena said: “Most people wouldn’t welcome the idea of working on a Friday night especially if it was their birthday, but McFly band member Dougie loved it.”
