Dougie is the bass player and backing vocalist of british pop-rock band McFly. He has co-writer credits on many of McFly's tracks, including the lead writer credit on their 2007 number one single "Transylvania". Poynter also wrote an unrecorded track called Silence Is A Scary Sound, which is featured as a live recording on their third studio album Motion In The Ocean. Poynter was 15 when he joined the band. Because of his young age, Dougie and the other members of McFly hold the record for the youngest band to ever have a debut album go straight to number one, a record previously held by The Beatles. While we were enjoying a setlist of classic UK pop hits at McFly’s 10th anniversary shows at the Royal Albert Hall earlier this year, the band chose the occasion to perform their new single live.
As we noted at the time, ‘Love Is On The Radio’ hears them embrace a bit of US country music with soaring strings and barn dance vibes.
It’s a worthy addition to their already impressive discography, so we were delighted when McFly agreed to whip out their harmonica and perform the track live for us.
‘Love Is On The Radio’ will be released on November 24 and there will also be a McBusted mix available, which will feature – you guessed it – Busted (minus the eyebrows).
It’s the first cut to be lifted from their upcoming album, which is currently scheduled to be released in February 2014.
“It’s the most extreme route down that sound of where the album goes,” Tom Fletcher told us when we asked him if their new song is a good indication of things to come. “It’s very natural and organic sounding.”
Be reassured that McFly aren’t ditching their roots, though, as Tom added: “It’s not a heavy rock album. It’s very much a pop album, but played by us as a band.”
